Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

The Subclass 189 lets skilled workers live and work in Australia permanently without needing an employer or state sponsor. Eligibility runs on a points test covering age, qualifications, work experience, and English proficiency. Candidates submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and, if selected, receive an invitation to apply.

What you'll need

A provisional visa for skilled workers and their families willing to live and work in regional Australia.
Requires nomination by a state or territory government, or sponsorship from an eligible relative already settled in a regional area.
Valid for 5 years; holders can move to permanent residence through Subclass 191 after meeting residence and income requirements.
Suits candidates open to regional living who might not otherwise qualify for a direct PR pathway.

A permanent visa for skilled workers sponsored by an Australian employer, available in regional and non-regional areas alike.
Temporary Residence Transition stream: for applicants who’ve worked for the same employer on a 482/457 visa for 3 years (2 years if the 457 was lodged before 18 April 2017).
Direct Entry stream: for applicants with a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and at least 3 years’ relevant experience, gained anywhere.
Leads straight to permanent residence once granted.

An employer-sponsored temporary visa for filling a genuine skills gap the employer can’t fill locally.
Short-Term stream: up to 2 years (longer where a trade agreement applies).
Medium-Term stream: up to 4 years, for a narrower list of higher-skilled occupations, with a possible pathway to permanent residence.
Typical processing time: around 6–8 months.
